What's happening at IAFF106
Sisters and Brothers,
Your Political Action Committee (PAC) has met with several would-be candidates over the past few months. We've had meaningful conversations with these folks regarding your hours, wages and working conditions. We have looked into candidates' past records of voicing opinions on issues relating to the above and to Labor in general. Who supports your right to freely organize? Who believes that presumptive cancer coverage makes sense for firefighters? Who voted for our PTSD bill last year? Who supports Union Labor for our next Medic 1 unit?
It has been challenging to b...

This morning, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 931, the Firefighter Cancer Registry Act, by unanimous consent, sending the bill to the president for his signature. This final action by Congress is the culmination of several years of work by the IAFF to establish a one-of-a-kind national cancer registry specifically for fire fighters.
The Centers for Disease Control within the Department of Health and Human Services will partner with the IAFF and public health experts to establish the registry, which will collect detailed data on the occurrence of cancer in fire fighters. This dat...
Brothers and Sisters,
Having had the opportunity to live in a 'Communist' country overseas, I've experienced a system without democracy. It sucks. The responsibility/luxury of choosing our leasders and political direction is something which makes the U.S. sitll worth fighting for. Yet politics can seem daunting. Where does one begin? I recently came across a good article which breaks Democratic participation down. I thought it was good enough to share with everyone in the local.
Your Local has chosen to endorse Eric Richey in this race. Eric has prosecuted those who have attacked cops and firefighters. His opponent has the gall to, instead, attack our brothers and sisters in Blue. He suggests they are the reason for the crime we are seeing. Unfortunate. Eric will continue to protect our families by being hard on those who commit hard crime. Yet he is able to think outside of the box in terms of understanding that addiction and mental illness are not crimes and shoud not be treated as such.
Please join us for an evening with Eric Richey, cand...

Megan Wohlrab, daughter of North Whatcom Firefighter Mark Wohlrab, waves her support sign on the banks of the Nooksack River in Lynden.
Megan was one of a group of roughly 15 people there cheering on Local 106 in the canoe leg of the 2018 Ski to Sea Race.
Brothers and Sisters,
As we consider BFD Brother Carlberg's passing, it has been hugely disappointing that Mayor Linville was not willing to do the right thing by our friend in covering his esophageal cancer as duty related. IF we can pass this Presumptive Disease Add-On bill at the State level, we will no longer have to ask local government to do the 'right thing'. Instead, folks like Neil will simply be covered.
To those ends, we have a House and a Senate bill which need to pass out of the Rules Committee before they hit the legislative floor for an 'up or down' vote. We have governmental...
